2012 Constellation of Stars Comets

Dr. Raquel Marquez

Dr. Marquez is the Department Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She demonstrates brightness in the areas of Advocating, Connecting, and Empowering others. She has been an advocate for female faculty and staff as well as one who empowers the next generation of women. Dr. Marquez created a curriculum that teaches about gender issues, and in particular, the social role and contributions of Latinas in U.S. society. She has distinguished herself as the first and only Latina Department Chair in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. Under Dr. Marquez's stewardship, her department has been training the future leaders of the San Antonio community. She is an accomplished author, scholar, and film maker whose published work has primarily focused on social issues that impact women. In her latest book, she explains that "families change in response to women's economic strategies, labor market participation, and negotiations with spouses and relatives". Dr. Marquez has dedicated her academic career to generating knowledge that empowers women. Just recently after returning from the Oxford University's Roundtable for Women's Leadership, she created a similar opportunity for women at UTSA with the UTSA's inaugural Women's Leadership Academy. She forged new connections across the campus, and the members of the resulting professional network are now seeking additional ways to support their fellow female colleagues. She is definitely a "shooting star" on the UTSA campus and throughout the community as actively advocates for women at all levels!
